How Do Koi Fish Lay Eggs?
During spawning season when female Koi are pregnant with their eggs, the female’s belly will become visibly swollen with eggs and she will become less active. The gravid spot, a dark area on the underside of the fish near the tail, will also become more pronounced.
The process begins with the female koi releasing pheromones that attract male koi to her. The male Koi responds to the pheromones by going after the female Koi and nudging her sides with his snout. This stimulates the release of eggs from the female’s ovaries.
When ready to lay her eggs, the female Koi need a suitable place to lay their eggs. This can be a protected area of the pond or a spawning brush. The female koi will often lay their eggs where there’s mud at the bottom of ponds or in shallow areas where there is plenty of vegetation. After laying their eggs, the male koi will then release milt (sperm) to fertilize the eggs. After fertilization, the eggs will sink to the bottom of the pond where they will hatch in 5-10 days.
Then the baby koi also known as koi fry will emerge from the eggs with a yolk sac attached to their belly. This sac will provide them with nutrients for the first few days of their life until they are able to start swimming and feeding on their own.
Once the fry is free-swimming, it will begin to grow rapidly. Koi can gain up to 2 inches in their first few months!
